Sorry, You Can’t Date Keanu Reeves in ‘Cyberpunk 2077”Star Wars Pinball’ Has Your Favorite Brand in Ball Form Stay on target Silent Hill: Shattered Memories on the Wii in 2009 should’ve been all the proof we needed Sam Barlow was the real deal. That series had always been a premier survival horror franchise but as writer and lead designer Barlow really honed in on the psychological aspect that made the games truly terrifying, delivering easily the most haunted entry since Silent Hill 2.Barlow’s first indie game Her Story took those ideas in brilliant new directions, creating a live-action FMV game that wasn’t just great but a beautiful use of the previously laughable form. Combing through countless unsorted video clip interviews using your own cunning detective skills to solve a mystery, a mystery that only ends when you yourself reach personal closure, was one of the best gaming experiencing of 2015.So I’m super stoked for Barlow’s next project, Telling Lies, coming later this year. Check out this first trailer. While Her Story got a winning performance from British musician Viva Seifert, Telling Lies is much more star-studded. This time players are interrogating four subjects played by Kerry Bishé, Logan Marshall-Green, Angela Sarafyan, and current Storm (at least until Disney finds out) Alexandra Shipp. The expanded cast also expands gameplay opportunities. Players watch recovered NSA footage of not just each colorful character individually but also them interacting with each other. Keeping track of who is lying and who is telling the truth at any given moment in the two-year investigation should make the mystery even tougher to unravel than last time. And the sense of voyeuristic intimacy Her Story gave to the player seems even more overt since the characters are seen in their homes instead of sterile police interrogation rooms. So forget Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. Telling Lies is the only mystery game you need if you’re looking for a non-linear interactive live-action adventure. And it’s coming this year. For more check out my review of Her Story on our sister site PCMag. And on our other sister site IGN you can read this interview with Barlow where he compares the storytelling in Telling Lies to the hit crime TV show Breaking Bad.
