Baker III Institute for Public Policy among the top 30 think tanks in the United States. In preparing the report, TTCSP called for nominations of think tanks around the world. Only 288 of the world’s roughly 5,000 think tanks were nominated. From these, through an “expert-based selection process,” 30 were chosen from the United States and 30 from abroad. The report, titled “The Global ‘Go-To’ Think Tanks: The Leading PublicPolicy Research Organizations In The World,” was written by James McGann, senior fellow and director of the TTCSP. “This project grew out of the never-ending requests I receive from journalists, scholars and government officials to provide a list of the leading think tanks in a particular country or region of the world,” McGann wrote in the report’s introduction,  “Last year I launched a pilot project that was designed to identify some of the leading think tanks in the world in an attempt to answer these inquiries in a more systematic fashion.” Ambassador Edward P. Djerejian, founding director of the Baker Institute, noted that the Baker Institute is among the very youngest of those recognized and has one of the smallest annual budgets. ”Clearly we punch above our weight,” he said. “Much of the credit goes to the Baker Institute fellows and scholars who produce the intellectual product of our public policy institute and to the institute’s staff responsible for the programs and events.” The research on the U.S. organizations was conducted in 2006 for McGann’s book, “Think Tanks and Policy Advice in The US: Academics, Advisors andAdvocates.” According to the report, there are 1,776 think tanks in the U.S. More than 90 percent of them were created since 1951, and more than 50 percent are affiliated with universities. Founded in 1955, the Foreign Policy Research Institute is an independent, nonprofit organization based in Philadelphia. To view the Baker Institute Web site, go to” alt=”last_img” /> read more
