first_img Laois Councillor ‘amazed’ at Electric Picnic decision to apply for later date for 2021 festival Bizarre situation as Ben Brennan breaks up Fianna Fáil-Fine Gael arrangement to take Graiguecullen-Portarlington vice-chair role Pinterest Electric Picnic Facebook WhatsApp News Twitter 139 days after the country went to the polls to vote in the General Election – it finally looks like we will have a new government.Negotiating teams for Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the Green Party thrashed out a Programme For Government over the last number of weeks. That deal was agreed last week and was put before the members of the three parties who were asked to vote on whether they agreed with it or not.And with all three now in agreement, it is likely that Fianna Fail’s Michael Martin will be elected Taoiseach at a special Dail sitting in the Convention Centre tomorrow. The first vote back in was the Fine Gael party who accepted the deal by 80% Yes to 20% No.The party uses an electoral college system for votes of this nature that is weighted heavily in favour of the parliamentary party members, comprised of TDs, MEPs and Senators.50% of the vote goes for the Fine Gael parliamentary party, 25% to the membership, 15% to their executive and 10% to the elected councillors. The Parliamentary Party approved the deal (90-10%), as did Constituency Delegates (71-29%) and Executive Council (85-15%). The Council of Local Representatives was closer but it was still approved by 57% Yes to 43% No.The second vote returned was Fianna Fail. 14,375 people were eligible to vote and 11,071 of them did so.In the end, 74% were in favour and 26% against – so once again it was overwhelmingly passed. Both Fianna Fail and Fine Gael only required a simple majority of greater than 50% to pass the deal but the Green Party needed 66% and their vote was in last.1,892 votes were cast 1,435 voted yes. 457 voted no. So it got 76% yes and 24% No.SEE ALSO – CONFIRMED: GAA unveil revised inter-county schedule for remainder of 2020 Twitter TAGSFianna FailFine GaelProgramme for GovernmentThe Green Party Home News BREAKING: Ireland set to get new government as Fine Gael, Fianna Fail… News Facebook Previous articleCoronavirus Daily Noticeboard – Friday, June 26, 2020Next articleDeaths in Laois – Saturday, June 27, 2020 Alan HartnettStradbally native Alan Hartnett is a graduate of Knockbeg College who has worked in the local and national media since 2008. first_img5. Late Night Chillwave SetsFinishing up Thursday and Friday nights were two late night sets by Tycho and How to Dress Well, which served as perfect lullabies before sending the crowds off to bed. Both on the Pavillion Stage, the downtempo electropop sets combined with dreamy visuals left attendees in a trance after running around all day in the sun.HTDW’s set was in particularly intimate as few festival-goers had the zest after Paul McCartney’s high energy performance to make it across the grounds to the show. Lead singer Tom Krell took liking to this cozy setting as he passionately serenaded the crowd and gave background stories of the songs. Krell even surprised the crowd with a Taylor Swift cover. 2. Paul McCartney’s BirthdayHeadliner Paul McCartney opened up his two and a half hour long set Friday with “Birthday,” making note of his 73rd birthday the day before. McCartney’s liveliness held strong past midnight as he played several Beatles tunes supported by the crowd and tributes to John Lennon and the recent tragedy in Charleston, SC. McCartney surprised a fan by granting her poster’s request to sign a tattoo she had of his face shortly before finishing out the set with a grand finale of fireworks. Firefly Music Festival’s fourth annual gathering took place in Dover, DE this past weekend, with a sold out crowd of 90,000 attendees and four days of headliners including Paul McCartney, The Killers, Morrissey, Snoop Dogg, Foster the People, Modest Mouse, Zedd and more.Severe thunderstorms Saturday night caused cancellations of sets including Kings of Leon, late night Lettuce, Steve Aoki, and The Chainsmokers while cutting short Sublime and Kid Cudi performances. Although fans left disappointed during the evacuation that night, they were happy with the announcement of Steve Aoki and The Chainsmokers’ rescheduled sets Sunday, and with the music and festivities overall! Here are some highlights from the weekend:1. The Killers Brighten Up Kings of Leon FansSunday night on the main stage The Killers honored their festival co-headliners Kings of Leon with two cover songs. Kings of Leon’s Saturday night set was canceled due to torrential rainfall and an evacuation of the festival grounds, but fans were happy to hear The Killers pay respect with a full rendition of “The Bucket” and a sing-along, acoustic tease of “Use Somebody”. 3. The Crowd’s Embracement of the MudThe combination of 90,000 people and heavy rainstorms throughout the weekend left the festival grounds of the woodlands with quicksand-like soil. The ankle-deep, and sometimes knee-deep, mud surely didn’t stop festival goers from raging all day and running from one performer to the next. Several attendees abandoned their shoes and danced barefoot throughout the weekend.4. Matt and Kim’s Twerk SurfingMatt and Kim win the award for the wildest set of the weekend as they belted out every ounce of energy they could into a fully reciprocating crowd. The duo jumped around the stage shouting, and Kim even dived into the crowd to twerk surf before returning back on stage to dry hump her drum set. “Let’s make this the best show of our lives!” shouted from both of them. 6. The Guy Who Stole the Show at Snoop DoggSunday night during Snoop Dogg, a crowd member scaled a speaker tower for a few songs before Snoop performed his Akon collaboration, “I Wanna Love You”, with shoutout lyrics of “I see you winding and grinding up on that pole.” Eventually beer bottles were thrown at the attendee who finally came down to be handled by security and Dover police officers.7. Steve Aoki Takes the CakeHouse DJ Steve Aoki, originally scheduled for a midnight set Saturday night, treated his rescheduled Sunday afternoon performance like any other late night set with his tradition of cake throwing and head banging. Eager crowds flooded to the Backyard Stage with signs begging to be thrown a cake. Aoki threw out at least ten cakes along with a plethora of champagne.Photo via Ilya Savenok//Getty Images8. Glass Animals Covers Kanye WestEnglish indie-rock band Glass Animals brought a packed crowd to the Forest Stage Friday evening with several hits off of their award winning album ZABA and a set closer of Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown.” Dave Bayley on vocals walked his microphone into the crowd to provide a very smooth and slowed down anthem of the top hit.last_img read more

first_img12 May 2014 The African National Congress (ANC) has been officially declared the winner of South Africa’s 2014 general election, after securing 62.15% of the national vote in last Wednesday’s poll. Announcing the results in Pretoria on Saturday evening, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said the ANC had received 11 436 921 votes, which translates into 249 seats in the country’s National Assembly. The party remains in control in eight of the country’s provinces, with the exception of the Western Cape, which stays under the Democratic Alliance (DA), which secured 59.38% of the provincial vote. The DA increased its support nationally to 22.23% (4 091 584 votes), giving it 89 seats in the National Assembly. Newcomers the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) emerged as the third most popular party after the ANC and DA, with 6.35% of the vote. The party, which was formed only eight months ago, received more than one-million votes in the national ballot, earning 25 seats in Parliament. It has also become the official opposition in North West and Limpopo provinces. IEC chairperson Pansy Tlakula said she was satisfied with how the elections were conducted. “I hereby, on behalf of the Electoral Commission, declare the 2014 national and provincial elections free and fair,” she said.Other parties in Parliament Of the 29 parties that contested the elections, only 13 received sufficient votes to gain representation in Parliament. The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) received the fourth-highest number of votes with 2.4% (441 854 votes). Its breakaway party, the National Freedom Party (NFP), came in fifth with 1.57% (288 742 votes). This was the first time the NFP had contested a national election. The United Democratic Movement (UDM) increased its support from 0.85% in 2009 to 1% (184 636 votes), with the sixth-highest share of votes. The Freedom Front Plus improved its support from 0.83% in 2009 to 0.9% (165 715 votes), while the African Christian Democratic Party received 0.57% of the vote (104 039 votes). The Congress of the People received 0.67% (123 221 votes) this time around. Agang SA got 0.28% (52 334 votes) of the national vote. A total of 251 957 votes were spoilt nationally, up from 239 237 in the last poll, while over 18-million of people (73.42% of those eligible to vote) participated in the election. “As we celebrate two decades of democracy and conclude the 2014 elections, we can affirm democracy is alive and well and thriving in our land,’ Tlakula said. IEC vice-chair Terry Tselane said the elections had demonstrated the same spirit the country had in 1994, something he said the nation should be proud of. Both the African Union (AU) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) observer missions congratulated South Africa on a free, fair, transparent and credible election. Source: read more

first_imgAmerica’s got talent. So why is it so hard to find? Maybe it wouldn’t be great theater, but why not develop another reality-based television show based on marriage—one that would tie the knot between those elusive skilled workers and job openings at thriving U.S. employers. You can have your manufactured pop stars and your weight-loss champions. And please, keep your dancing celebrities. Give me something that’s a little more connected to reality—the continuing struggles of those who make up the U.S. labor market, showing how the short- and long-term effects of the latest recession are truly damaging the country’s future. New research by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) shows that this is not going away anytime soon. Of manufacturers that are hiring full-time staff, more than two-thirds (67 percent) said their organizations are having a difficult time recruiting for available positions, virtually unchanged from the summer of 2011 (68 percent). Naturally the process becomes even more strenuous for highly specialized positions: 74 percent of those surveyed said they’re struggling to fill jobs that require “new and different skill sets in manufacturing,” up from 72 percent in 2011 and 43 percent in 2010. What makes this scenario even more frustrating is that many of these companies already are doing quite well, but business likely would be booming with a full staff. Nearly three-quarters of manufacturers surveyed (73 percent) reported “mild to significant” improvement in their organization’s financial health compared with a year ago, up sharply from 59 percent in both 2011 and 2010. Of that group, 24 percent reported a “significant” financial recovery, up from 19 percent in 2011 and just 6 percent in 2010. Simple math will tell you how harmful the skills gap is for the U.S. economy in the near term. Fewer people employed means fewer dollars being spent on goods and services and fewer taxes being collected. Now for the scary long-term news: Some companies are getting quite complacent about the skills mismatch issue, according to research by staffing services firm Manpower. The company’s 2012 Global Talent Shortage Survey showed that 56 percent of employers indicate that unfilled positions are expected to have “little or no impact” on constituents, such as customers and investors. That’s up considerably from 36 percent in 2011. Why the sharp rise in that metric? Manpower’s analysis suggests that the data could be revealing a “new normal” for the workforce—companies operating at higher levels of efficiency due not only to technological improvements but to cutting labor costs by employing fewer workers and increasing productivity of existing staff. Will the time come when skating by on the bare minimum doesn’t produce the results desired by consumers, stockholders and others with a stake in corporate America? Possibly. But given the painfully slow progress the country’s economy has made, it’s suddenly easy to see why many companies aren’t extremely worried about filling a few slots on their payrolls. This is incredibly shortsighted, though; as Manpower’s analysis correctly points out, “failure to understand the impact unfilled positions can have on the client experience and stakeholders . . . is a monumental mistake . . . it is an unsustainable approach to addressing talent shortages in the Human Age.” Now there’s a dose of reality for all HR professionals to consider. Traditionally, Pinterest has been one of the most underrated social media platforms for marketers, and these partnerships are evidence that some brands have caught on to this secret,” says Sozoe Creative’s lead digital strategist.Ball said, over the past three years, Pinterest has been the strongest platform for running a keyword-based strategy for their clients. “Sometimes producing results as high as 400 to 500 percent return on adverting spend (ROAS) each month,” said Ball. “Additionally, Pinterest’s earned media potential provides a significant advantage to the platform, as every ‘re-pin’ a pin receives, 11 more profiles see that content.”In a survey of Pinterest users conducted by Toluna, 87 percent of participants said Pinterest helped them find the right products for the holidays last season.
