manonallard/iStock(MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md.) — After more than 54,000 citations were issued last year in to drivers who blew past school buses with stop signs extended in Montgomery County, Maryland, all buses this year will be outfitted with safety cameras.Negligent drivers may see fines of up to $500, too, officials said. The Montgomery County Department of Police on Friday released footage of a dozen such incidents in the wake of releasing a video showing a 16-year-old girl being struck by a car as she made her way toward a school bus.The teen girl is seen being tossed onto the hood of the car, which reverses back toward the scene of the accident after the girl picked herself up and sprinted back toward the vehicle that dropped her off.Capt. Thomas Didone told ABC News the videos are being distributed in part to “warn and alert drivers, parents and school children of dangers.”“The failure by drivers to stop for school buses can result in catastrophic consequences,” the department said in a statement. “There is absolutely no reason to hurry and drive impatiently that is worth the loss of or injury to any of our children.”Copyright © 2019, ABC Radio. A new study from Iowa State University finds that media violence affects aggressive behaviors across a variety of cultures. The study’s sample includes people from seven different countries. Participants named three of their most frequently watched or played TV shows, movies or video games, and then rated how often they used each title. The researchers then evaluated the violence level of the media, and contrasted that data with survey answers that looked at behaviors like physical aggression or arguing.Iowa State psychologist Craig Anderson says the findings show that exposure to violent media is associated with aggressive behavior. “There’s some variation of course, as will be true in any study, but it looked to be pretty much the same affect in all of these countries,” Anderson said.Craig AndersonResearchers looked at the media habits of more than 2,100 people. This study is the first to examine the effects of media violence on such a wide scale, according to Anderson.“Although there have been studies of media violence finding similar affects in multiple countries, there haven’t been any large scale studies that use the same measures of media violence exposure and the same measures of aggressive behavior in all the different counties all at the same time,” Anderson said. Criticism of the study takes issue with the method researchers used to rate violence and aggression levels. The study’s sample includes people from Australia, China, Croatia, Germany, Japan, Romania, and the U.S.(Thanks to Iowa Public Radio’s Sarah Boden)Share this:FacebookTwitter

Australia has seen its second aircraft evacuation in less than a week due to a bomb threat.Passengers on a Virgin regional flight from the Sydney to the New South Wales regional town of Albury were told to evacuate the plane after the threat was discovered scrawled on a sick bag in the toilet.Passengers left the ATR turboprop through the rear door and emergency exits but, contrary to some reports, no doors were ripped off and it is understood crew did not instruct passengers to jump out and “run, run, run’’. That advice is believed to have been shouted by a passengerPolice met the flight as it landed about 9:35am and a man was arrested.“The main point to make here is that the plane landed at 9:35 am. We had all of the occupants of aeroplane secured and safe within five minutes of it landing,’’ a police spokesman said.“We’ve completely searched the aeroplane at this stage and our inquiries will continue there.’’A Virgin spokeswoman confirmed there was “a security incident” on Virgin Australia flight VA1174.“One passenger is assisting police with their enquiries,’’ she said. “The matter is now in the hands of the New South Wales police.”Michelle McNamara, who works for a car hire company in the airport terminal, said police, firefighters and ambulance crews closed off half the terminal during the operation.“It’s normally quiet, it’s Albury Airport,” she told AAP.“It’s a bit concerning. With all that’s happening in the world, it makes you think the worst.”The incident comes less than a week after passengers aboard a Malaysia Airlines flight in Melbourne helped deal with an allegedly mentally ill man who shouted he had a bomb and tried to enter the cockpit. The 25-year-old economy passenger, a Sri Lankan national on a student visa, jumped up just after take-off and made the bomb threats as the plane was about 4kms out from Melbourne airport last Wednesday. He was brandishing a device now believed to be a Bluetooth speaker.Police were criticised after the incident for the amount of time it took them to evacuate the plane — about 90 minutes — after it landed. The plane’s pilots had radioed to say the passenger responsible for the bomb threat had been subdued but police said they were focused on getting everyone safely off the flight.Victoria Police chief commissioner Graham Ashton said police were worried about the possibility of co-offenders or explosive devices that could be triggered by an evacuation.
