Le 16 janvier 2010 à 15:03 • Emmanuel Perrinlast_img read more

Le 21 décembre 2012 à 16:56 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more

It was the best way for us to spend more time in the world of the Z Fighters just a little while longer, and we’ll always be thankful we got another season. But there’s still a Dragon Ball Super movie on the way, this we know of for sure, and it should give us that quick Dragon Ball fix we’ve been looking for.I really hope we get to see some more of Shintani’s new designs for the movie soon. first_img There is no question robots will eventually join the workforce. But will the manager’s dream—cleaning sewers without complaint—be the workers’ nightmare?Matt Beane, a faculty member at UC Santa Barbara’s Technology Management program, describes a utopia where automated employees handle “dirty, dangerous, and dull” tasks, like shutting down a leaky nuclear reactor or inspecting electronic components. There’s just one catch: This paradise, in which human nor cyborg is more valued than the other, doesn’t exist.“The problem is that installing robots often makes the jobs around them worse,” Beane wrote in a piece for Wired.“Use a robot for aerial reconnaissance, and remote pilots end up bored. Use a robot for surgery, and surgical trainees end up watching, not learning,” he said. “Use a robot to transport materials, and workers … can no longer interact with and learn from their customers. Use a robot to farm, and farmers end up barred from repairing their own tractors.”And he should know: Beane spent the last seven years studying these dynamics in the field.A research affiliate with MIT’s Institute for the Digital Economy, Beane studies deviance in work involving artificial intelligence—specifically robotics. His field research includes robotic surgery, materials transport, and telepresence in healthcare, elder care, and knowledge work. For two years, Beane watched automated medical procedures in top-tier U.S. hospitals, where “most nurses and surgical assistants were bored out of their skulls.”As he describes it, the process of robotic surgery is slow, slow, slow, fast, then very slow. While a surgeon operates the bot from a control console, everyone else stands around, twiddling their thumbs and checking Facebook.“There’s not a lot to do, but you always have to come ready,” Beane said. “Compared to open surgery, it’s clean, safe, and dull work.”The same can be said across other industries, where the installation of cyborgs has led to less challenging jobs for humans, with fewer opportunities to learn. There are pluses, of course: People can direct their attention elsewhere, to other projects or employees. But it’s not easy recognizing these opportunities.“Getting these clues takes careful, boots-on-the-ground attention to the entire work system as it changes,” according to Beane. “Using them to guide a broader work redesign can cost more than a typical robotic install—and not all roboticization is worth equal attention.“But not doing this work guarantees an outcome we can’t afford: a future of degrading work,” he said.Worried about the future of your livelihood? first_img Sorry, You Can’t Date Keanu Reeves in ‘Cyberpunk 2077”Star Wars Pinball’ Has Your Favorite Brand in Ball Form Stay on target Silent Hill: Shattered Memories on the Wii in 2009 should’ve been all the proof we needed Sam Barlow was the real deal. That series had always been a premier survival horror franchise but as writer and lead designer Barlow really honed in on the psychological aspect that made the games truly terrifying, delivering easily the most haunted entry since Silent Hill 2.Barlow’s first indie game Her Story took those ideas in brilliant new directions, creating a live-action FMV game that wasn’t just great but a beautiful use of the previously laughable form. Combing through countless unsorted video clip interviews using your own cunning detective skills to solve a mystery, a mystery that only ends when you yourself reach personal closure, was one of the best gaming experiencing of 2015.So I’m super stoked for Barlow’s next project, Telling Lies, coming later this year. Check out this first trailer. While Her Story got a winning performance from British musician Viva Seifert, Telling Lies is much more star-studded. This time players are interrogating four subjects played by Kerry Bishé, Logan Marshall-Green, Angela Sarafyan, and current Storm (at least until Disney finds out) Alexandra Shipp. The expanded cast also expands gameplay opportunities. Players watch recovered NSA footage of not just each colorful character individually but also them interacting with each other. Keeping track of who is lying and who is telling the truth at any given moment in the two-year investigation should make the mystery even tougher to unravel than last time. And the sense of voyeuristic intimacy Her Story gave to the player seems even more overt since the characters are seen in their homes instead of sterile police interrogation rooms. So forget Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. Telling Lies is the only mystery game you need if you’re looking for a non-linear interactive live-action adventure. And it’s coming this year. For more check out my review of Her Story on our sister site PCMag. And on our other sister site IGN you can read this interview with Barlow where he compares the storytelling in Telling Lies to the hit crime TV show Breaking Bad.last_img read more

first_imgAt Fort Vancouver in the 1840s, you had to make everything by hand.If you wanted music, you learned to fiddle. If you wanted merriment, you learned to dance and sing. If you wanted to play, you fashioned toys out of wood. If you wanted bread, you baked it.And if you wanted fire — to keep warm, to bake that bread, to shoot a gun — you struck it with steel and flint. Once that was done, you preserved it for as long as you possibly could, according to ranger Mike Twist. Because, as Saturday’s weather made plain, generating sparks and nurturing an actual flame at this cold, wet time of year takes a lot of labor. But in the end — after many minutes of striking and puffing, striking and puffing — a little flame grew in a piece of fabric and got touched to the weapon, whose proper name is not a flintlock but a “firelock,” Twist said — and BANG! The 2 p.m. black powder demonstration, initially canceled because of rain, happened at last.Nothing could be more authentic about an 1840s Christmas at the fort — or a 2016 Christmas anywhere in the Pacific Northwest — than a teeming downpour that gives way to a rainbow. But Saturday’s shower didn’t seem to chase anybody away from Christmas at Fort Vancouver, the annual celebration and demonstration of making your own.“It’s nice. It’s real life,” said 10-year-old Karinna Yakimchuk, who attended Christmas at Fort Vancouver with her aunt Liliya Yefimov. When The Columbian bumped into them they were standing under the eaves of the central Chief Factor’s House, waiting for the rain to stop, and Yefimov was reassuring her niece that her handmade wreath would dry out again.last_img read more
